Alkana adalah senyawa hidrokarbon jenuh yang menjadi komponen utama dalam gas alam dan minyak bumi, dengan rumus umum CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. Senyawa ini memiliki peran penting sebagai bahan bakar dan sumber energi utama dalam kehidupan modern. Namun, penggunaannya memberikan dampak signifikan terhadap lingkungan. Metana, salah satu alkana sederhana, merupakan gas rumah kaca yang memiliki potensi pemanasan global lebih tinggi dibandingkan karbon dioksida. Selain itu, pengolahan dan pembakaran alkana berkontribusi pada pencemaran udara melalui emisi karbon dioksida, karbon monoksida, dan partikel berbahaya. Proses ekstraksi dan transportasi gas alam juga berisiko menyebabkan kebocoran metana, serta kerusakan ekosistem akibat tumpahan minyak dan penggunaan teknik rekahan hidrolik (fracking).
