Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pengaruh penerapan Grammar Translation Method (GTM) terhadap kemampuan menghafal vocabulary siswa kelas IV di SDN 057203 Ara Condong Kabupaten Langkat, dalam  pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metode Grammar Translation Method sering digunakan dalam konteks pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris disekolah dasar untuk mengajarkan kosakata dengan cara yang terstruktur dan terfokus. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas IV SDN 057203 Ara Condong berjulah 48 orang yang terdiri dari kelas IVA dan IVB. Kelas IV sebagai kelas eksperimen berjumlah 25 orang dan kelas IVB sebagai kelas kontrol berjumlah 23 orang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) tingkat kemampuan menghafal vocabulary siswa mengalami peningkatan baik pada kelompok eksperimen namun untuk kelompok kontrol tidak meningkat dengan baik karena tidak ada siswa yang tuntas pada kelas kontrol. Peningkatan nilai rata-rata pada kelas eskperimen sebesar 16,6. (2) terdapat pengaruh signifikan dari pengaruh grammar translation method (gtm) terhadap kemampuan menghafal vocabulary siswa yang ditandai dengan nilai thitung sebesar 3, 018 > ttabel 2,059 dan nilai Sig. (2-tailed) 0,004 < 0,05.
